Old Stables Self Catering Accommodation — Leitrim
The Old Rectory has been a highly successful and longstanding Bed and Breakfast establishment in County Leitrim. Due to high demand from a number of tour operators for self-catering accommodation, the owners Patrick and Julie decided to convert an old listed building on the site into four self-catering units. The couple approached Leitrim Development Company in June 2011 and with their assistance received grant aid from the Rural Development Programme (LEADER) for the renovation of the listed building under the Encouragement of Tourism Activities measure.
The main work consisted of putting in floors, windows, doors, walls, electrical, plumbing, kitchens, bathrooms, fire proofing, landscaping, drainage and paving. Careful consideration was given to ensure that the character and history of the building was preserved.
The apartments are today finished to a high standard and have a rainwater harvesting system, solar panels, are highly insulated and have all A rated appliances. The Old Stables Self Catering Apartments were officially opened by Phil Hogan T.D, Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government on the 29th July 2012.
The renovation of the buildings created local employment and a full time architect was employed to oversee the project from start to finish in addition to one contractor employing three construction workers. The investment continues to create local employment today, with additional part-time workers employed to assist Patrick and Julie in providing a high quality tourism offering.
The owners Patrick and Julie stated
“This project has been in the making for the past 15 years and it would not be completed today without the funding from Leitrim Development Company. As a listed building there were a lot of requirements that made the development of the project more challenging. We love old buildings which is why we choose to live here, and the preservation of this building is something we have been slowly working on over a number of years. Today the completion of this project makes us very proud that this beautiful old building will go on to be enjoyed for many more generations to come in the style for which it was originally intended. We would like to thank the staff of Leitrim Development Company who helped and guided us on the long process of planning, application and development.”
