Mayo Abbey Community Cookery School
This project supported by South West Mayo Development Company involved equipping a training kitchen for a cookery school in a rural community.
The local community themselves identified the need for training for catering staff. The Community acquired funding through the Local Training Initiative to run a Level 6 Fetac course which has been very successful and resulted in 80% of those trained going into employment.
This was a great achievement in its 1st year as the participants had not come from feeder courses and some were men that were unemployed construction workers. Mayo Abbey Community through their Community Cookery School have the basis for a sustainable community enterprise as they have researched the needs and are responding through delivering classes, services and produce. This project is worked in tandem with their community garden which supplies organic produce
The kitchen was funded through the RDP programme supported by South West Mayo Development and the training was funded by Fas. This project is generating income through the delivery of a range of cookery classes for special dietary needs as well as responding to needs of non-traditional groups such as men.
GMIT in Galway have partnered with the community and have acknowledged the value and positive impact of this project
