O'Donnell Engineering, South Tipperary

O’Donnell Engineering in Emly, Co. Tipperary was established by William O’Donnell in 1978, and from humble beginnings in a small garage is now a leading manufacturer of Agricultural Engineering products including gates, cattle crushes, feeders, weighing machines and many other labour saving devices.

William applied to the South Tipperary Development Company in 2010 and again in 2011 for grant assistance to develop and manufacture a new automated cattle handling product. The grant was used to purchase an automated tube bending machine and a semi-automated band saw, as well as installing three phase electricity in a new manufacturing unit.

O’Donnell Engineering received a grant of €7,152.50 for the three phase electricity in 2011, and a separate grant of €88,434.50 for the purchase of the equipment in 2011/12.

Bill O’Donnell believes the support from South Tipperary Development Company has been crucial in enabling him to grow his business and create jobs:

“The new machines have had a big impact on job creation as they have allowed us to increase the number of units we produce and make the whole production process far more efficient. The new handling unit is selling extremely well and our business is growing. We couldn’t have done this without the help from the Development Company.”

In fact, since the new machinery has been delivered, the company has taken on 6 additional full-time employees and bringing the total over of local jobs sustained by this business to 10.
