Nas na Riogh Housing Association supported by County Kildare LEADER Partnership
The Nás na Ríogh Housing Association was formed in 2000 with the objective of transforming the former Convent of Mercy complex in Naas town into a housing project for older persons and also a multipurpose community centre for residents of the town. This historic and beautiful building has been transformed into 53 apartments and an intergenerational community complex in the centre of Naas which opened in 2011.
In 2010, the association sough funding from County Kildare LEADER Partnership to support the restoration of the deconsecrated chapel located in the centre of the complex for use as a Cultural and Arts centre. Their application was successful and they were awarded grant aid of €94,007 to complete the project.
Since completion in 2011, the Culture and Arts Centre has been a valuable resource for both the residents on site as well as the wider community in Naas.
The Centre also supports local employment with two full-time and three part-time employees. The centre also relies upon up to 20 volunteers who give their time free of charge to support the activities provided in the centre.
Margharita Solon, Chairperson, Nás na Ríogh Housing Association says that:
“Nás na Ríogh Housing Association was delighted to receive confirmation of LEADER funding support through County Kildare LEADER Partnership for the development of the Arts and Cultural Centre at McAuley Place Naas. Without this invaluable support, we could not have completed this project. Nás na Ríogh Housing Association had already been supported under the previous LEADER programme for the Community Centre in the complex. We are forever grateful for this enabling funding in support of an innovative community development project at McAuley Place in Naas”.
